    Job Opportunity: State Veterinarian (X9 Posts) – North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development

    The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is seeking nine qualified and experienced State Veterinarians to join their team across multiple districts.

    Job Title: State Veterinarian
    Location: Ratlou, Naledi, Molopo Lekwa-Teemane, Greater Taung, Moses Kotane, Kgetleng, Potchefstroom, Maquassi Hills State Veterinary Office
    Closing Date: 3 July 2026
    Contract: Permanent, Level 11, all-inclusive remuneration package of R932,292 per annum

    The successful candidates will be responsible for managing animal health risk assessments, overseeing disease control schemes, ensuring compliance with import/export protocols, and supporting departmental flagship projects.

    This role requires a dedicated professional with a strong understanding of animal disease legislation, meat safety, and export/import regulations, complemented by excellent communication, analytical, and computer skills.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct risk assessments for animal health hazards within assigned areas
    • Manage and coordinate the Brucellosis Scheme and assess TB prevalence, implementing control measures
    • Participate in the Primary Animal Health Care (PAHC) project and secondary intervention functions

    • Conduct risk assessments on exported commodities and ensure compliance of imported goods
    • Inspect and register facilities involved in export activities
    • Prepare operational budgets and contribute to regional financial planning

    • Compile work statistics, manage data, and evaluate personnel performance
    • Report to line managers and support departmental flagship projects

    Requirements

    • NQF 8 BVSc/BVMCh Degree recognized by SAQA
    • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC)
    • 1-2 years post-qualification experience

    • Knowledge of the Animal Diseases Act (Act 35 of 1984) and Meat Safety Act (Act 40 of 2000)
    • Understanding of import/export protocols and animal disease eradication schemes (TB and CA)

    • Familiarity with departmental flagship projects
    • Computer literacy and skills in financial management, research, and data analysis
    • Valid driver’s license
