    Elastic, the Search AI Company, is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch - Search team. This role focuses on enhancing vector similarity search functionality within Elasticsearch, contributing to robust and feature-rich search experiences.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to produce an industry-leading vector database offering.
    • Contribute to Elasticsearch full time by building new search features and fixing bugs.
    • Work with a globally distributed team focusing on vector search capabilities.
    • Be an expert in Elasticsearch vector similarity, providing insights and improvements.
    • Collaborate with community members on issues and pull requests.
    • Write idiomatic modern Java, as Elasticsearch is primarily Java-based.

    Requirements

    • Professional experience with vector similarity and vector databases; familiarity with HNSW, IVF, or related algorithms.
    • Strong skills in core Java and standard library knowledge.
    • Ability to work autonomously and guide projects from inception to completion.
    • Experience in collaborative development, especially in asynchronous environments.
    • Proficiency in various data storage technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Track record of using AI to enhance development and optimize code.
    • Ability to collaborate across functions and manage multiple projects based on business needs.
