Overview
The role involves a Principal Software Engineer position within the Elasticsearch - Search team at Elastic, a globally distributed search AI company. The engineer will focus on enhancing vector similarity search functionalities in Elasticsearch, contributing to the development and implementation of new features and improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead initiatives to produce an industry-leading vector database with unparalleled search speed and relevance.
- Build new search features and fix bugs while improving code readability.
- Serve as an expert on vector similarity in Elasticsearch.
- Collaborate with community members on issues and pull requests.
- Write idiomatic modern Java, as Elasticsearch is primarily Java-based.
Requirements
- Experience implementing vector similarity techniques on a large-scale search platform.
- Professional knowledge of vector similarity and databases, utilizing relevant algorithms like HNSW and IVF.
- Strong core Java skills and familiarity with data structures and concurrency constructs.
- Ability to work autonomously and guide projects from start to finish.
- Comfortable developing collaboratively and providing feedback on code.
- Experience with data storage technologies such as Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven track record in using AI for development, debugging, and code optimization.
