    As part of its work in Iraq, GRC is supporting stakeholders in Duhok to improve their capacity to organize, process, and utilize evidence relating to international crimes in accordance with international legal standards and best practices.

    About the Legal Adviser Role

    The Legal Adviser will work remotely as part of GRC’s international team, supporting project implementation through legal research, drafting legal materials, and providing technical expertise on accountability processes.

    The successful candidate will also contribute to project coordination and collaborate closely with project leads, legal experts, and local partners.

    Key Responsibilities

    The Legal Adviser will be expected to:

    • Conduct legal research and review relevant jurisprudence.
    • Draft, edit, and revise legal outputs and accountability materials.
    • Participate in meetings, workshops, and stakeholder consultations.
    • Coordinate with project team members to ensure timely delivery of project activities.
    • Provide technical guidance and support to local partners.
    • Contribute ideas during project planning and implementation discussions.
    • Assist with project administration when required.
    • Identify opportunities for future collaboration and programme development.
    • Perform additional tasks assigned by the Project Lead that fall within the scope of the consultancy.

    Required Qualifications

    Applicants should possess a strong academic and professional background in international law.

    Essential qualifications include:

    • Advanced degree in Law.
    • At least five years of relevant professional experience.
    • Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
      • International Criminal Law
      • International Humanitarian Law
      • International Human Rights Law
    • Experience providing legal advisory support to criminal investigative or judicial bodies.
    • Demonstrated experience in investigating and documenting international crimes, including:
      • War crimes
      • Crimes against humanity
      • Genocide
    • Knowledge of international criminal investigation standards, including:
      • Evidence management
      • Chain of custody procedures
      • Witness and victim protection considerations
    • Strong analytical, legal research, report-writing, and legal review skills.
    • Excellent written and spoken English.

    Preferred Experience

    While not mandatory, GRC notes that the following experience will strengthen an application:

    • Supporting investigative or prosecutorial institutions through capacity development.
    • Working with specialized national or international war crimes units.
    • Experience strengthening accountability mechanisms.
    • Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
    • Strong organizational and workflow management skills.
