Software Engineer - Application Platform @Figma

Overview

Figma is looking for an experienced backend engineer to join the Application Platform team within its Infrastructure organization. This role involves building shared Ruby frameworks and optimizing backend systems that support Figma's REST APIs and other product functionalities.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and evolve shared Ruby frameworks for REST APIs, asynchronous jobs, workflow orchestration, and data access.
• Improve the availability, reliability, scalability, and performance of backend systems.
• Modernize a large Ruby codebase through architectural changes.
• Enhance backend development processes and tools.
• Strengthen the scalability and recovery capabilities of Figma’s asynchronous job platform.
• Collaborate with product engineers and Infrastructure teams to address recurring pain points.
• Establish engineering practices through shared libraries, APIs, and technical guidance.
• Mentor other engineers and contribute to a culture of high technical standards.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years with Ruby.
• Experience in building and maintaining large Ruby applications.
• Knowledge of designing reliable distributed systems at production scale.
• Ability to improve established systems through architecture and modularization.
• Experience creating scalable abstractions and mentoring across teams.
• Experience with background-job or workflow systems is a plus.
• Familiarity with AWS services, Kubernetes, and Terraform is advantageous.
• Skills in improving test performance and CI systems are beneficial.
