Overview

Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their Tempo team, responsible for developing the open-source distributed tracing backend behind Grafana Cloud Traces. This remote opportunity is targeted at applicants located in Spain, Sweden, the UK, Ireland, or Germany.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives, including trace aggregation APIs and autoscaling cells.
• Own the architecture of core Tempo components, driving design reviews and documenting decisions.
• Design user-friendly APIs and interfaces for Tempo.
• Drive operational excellence with concrete service level objectives (SLOs).
• Collaborate closely with Product and engineering teams for efficient deployments.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews and design feedback.
• Participate in on-call support for the services developed.
• Contribute to the open-source community around Tempo.

Requirements

• Proven technical leadership experience in managing complex initiatives.
• Hands-on experience with distributed data systems, including ingestion pipelines and storage engines.
• Proficiency in software craftsmanship with a focus on maintainability.
• Experience in Go or similar systems programming languages.
• Strong operational mindset and customer focus.
• Effective communication skills within a remote team.
