Staff Software Engineer - Databases, Tempo | Spain | Remote @Grafana Labs

Overview

Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their team focused on Tempo, an open-source distributed tracing backend. This remote position is available to applicants in Spain, Sweden, the UK, Ireland, or Germany.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives from problem framing through rollout.
• Own the architecture of core Tempo components such as ingestion, storage, query, and metrics generation.
• Design APIs for both humans and agents, shaping the next generation of Tempo’s interfaces.
• Drive operational excellence, owning outcomes against concrete SLOs.
• Collaborate closely with Product and sibling teams to understand usage and blockages.
• Mentor engineers and enhance team capability through code reviews and design feedback.
• Participate in on-call duties and contribute to incident response and learning.
• Engage with the open-source community, reviewing contributions and steering the project.

Requirements

• Proven technical leadership and experience managing complex initiatives.
• Deep systems experience in building and operating distributed data systems.
• Strong software craftsmanship and a track record of writing maintainable software.
• Familiarity with Go programming or similar systems languages.
• An operational mindset with experience managing production services.
• Customer focus, breaking complex problems into short feedback loops.
• Clear communication and leadership through collaborative documentation and code.
