Staff Software Engineer – Identity and Access, Identity Squads | UK | Remote @Grafana Labs

Overview

Grafana Labs is the company behind Grafana Cloud, a managed observability platform trusted by over 10,000 organizations. The Staff Software Engineer will work within the Identity Squads to enhance user authentication and authorization systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for authentication systems and lead complex initiatives from conception to delivery.
• Spend approximately 55% of time on backend development (Golang), 25% on technical leadership and collaboration, and 20% on operations and reliability.
• Define and own the technical architecture for authentication systems, including edge authentication redesign.
• Mentor and develop senior engineers, providing technical guidance and supporting professional growth.
• Serve as the technical authority for identity protocols and ensure alignment across the organization.
• Drive cross-team alignment on authentication standards and best practices.
• Represent Grafana Labs at meetups and conferences and contribute to the broader authentication community.

Requirements

• Proven expertise in distributed systems engineering with Go, and experience delivering large-scale production systems.
• Strong ability to define technical direction and drive architectural decisions independently.
• Experience with low-latency, high-throughput services in distributed, multi-tenant environments.
• Proven history of leading complex initiatives across teams.
• Ability to mentor and elevate the technical quality of senior engineers.
• Understanding of SLOs, SLIs, error budgets, and system design balancing reliability, security, and product velocity.
• Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to convey complex technical decisions clearly.
• Expert-level understanding of modern identity standards (OAuth, OIDC, SAML) and secure implementation at scale.
• Bonus: Familiarity with Kubernetes, TypeScript/React, OpenFGA, KiFederate IDP, security environments, and observability tooling (Grafana, Prometheus).
