    Overview

    The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is seeking a Global Director of Biodiversity Science to lead a new science initiative within its Global Science team, fostering global partnerships and supporting biodiversity governance.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead the biodiversity science team in setting and stewarding a strategic vision for biodiversity within TNC.
    • Provide thought leadership in futures thinking, scenario planning, and forecasting related to biodiversity.
    • Support regional teams by co-developing tools and evidence to demonstrate biodiversity outcomes on the ground.
    • Build embedded scientific capacity through advisory relationships and cross-regional learning.
    • Elevate TNC’s scientific engagement in global biodiversity governance arenas such as IPBES and CBD.
    • Collaborate closely with climate and social scientists to integrate biodiversity science with climate and social goals.
    • Lead and oversee complex, multi-year biodiversity science initiatives across disciplines and regions.
    • Ensure projects are scientifically rigorous, financially sustainable, and aligned with organizational priorities.
    • Work with philanthropy and organizational leadership to identify, secure, and communicate funding opportunities.

    Requirements

    • PhD or equivalent in biodiversity science or related field.
    • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, including supervisory and leadership roles.
    • Proven experience in interdisciplinary and international scientific research.
    • Strong background in biodiversity monitoring, indicators, assessment, and futures thinking.
    • Experience with global biodiversity governance platforms (e.g., IPBES, CBD).
    • Demonstrated ability to build relationships, communicate complex science effectively, and lead diverse teams.
    • Knowledge of emerging biodiversity technologies, including AI tools.
    • Deep professional ties to the Global South and experience with place-based conservation.

    Benefits

    U.S. Applicants: Starting range $121,635 – $182,495 annually, based on experience and location.
    Global Applicants: Compensation varies by country, based on local labor markets and qualifications.
