Head of Risk @Modern Treasury

Overview

Modern Treasury is hiring a Head of Risk to build the risk function from the ground up, ensuring effective management of financial transactions. This foundational role will involve developing necessary systems to manage customer onboarding, transaction risk, and fraud detection, among other responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Onboarding & underwriting: Evaluate customers for money movement and collaborate with Compliance on KYB.
• Transaction risk & limits: Authorize money movement in real time, managing dynamic limits as the business evolves.
• Reserves & exposure: Determine reserve policies and assess loss exposure across various risks.
• Detection & risk engine: Deploy tooling that automates decisions and utilizes AI for improved efficiency.
• New rails, stablecoins & wallet controls: Expand into emerging markets while ensuring safety and usability.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Product, Compliance, Finance, and customer-facing teams to create a unified risk and compliance system.

Requirements

• Experience in building risk functions in early-stage or high-growth companies.
• Understanding of payments risk, including ACH returns and counterparty risk.
• Curiosity towards new payment rails including stablecoins and wallets.
• Systems thinker with a focus on scalability.
• Technical and data fluency, with skills in SQL and ideally Python.
• Familiarity with managing risk events and pattern recognition.
• Ability to make informed decisions with incomplete data.
• Strong influence and communication skills across the company.
• Management experience is a plus.
