Elastic, the Search AI Company, is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch Performance team. The role involves leading architectural and code-level performance engineering initiatives to optimize Elasticsearch performance for large organizations.

Key Responsibilities

• Own core performance engineering initiatives from architecture to production.
• Develop foundational performance models and methodologies for complex, distributed systems.
• Drive optimization strategies to maintain Elasticsearch performance and scalability.
• Profile and analyze system behavior to identify bottlenecks.
• Ensure robust performance benchmarks and regression detection.
• Collaborate across the company for performance-first thinking.
• Design and build AI-assisted optimization harnesses.
• Mentor and coach other engineers regarding technical excellence.

Requirements

• Deep knowledge of Java internals and JVM memory management.
• Proven experience in profiling and optimizing distributed systems.
• Solid comprehension of distributed systems architecture.
• Experience using AI or advanced tooling for optimization.
• Ability to collaborate across functions and teams.
• Capable of working autonomously in a distributed team.
