Elastic, the Search AI Company, enables everyone to find answers using all their data at scale. The Principal Software Developer will join the Elasticsearch - Search team, focusing on enhancing vector similarity search functionality within Elasticsearch.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead initiatives to produce an industry-leading vector database offering with fast and relevant search capabilities.
• Contribute full-time to Elasticsearch, developing new search features and fixing bugs, while simplifying the codebase.
• Work with a distributed team on vector search capabilities.
• Become an expert in Elasticsearch's vector similarity implementation and contribute improvements.
• Collaborate with community members on issues and pull requests.
• Write idiomatic Java code, as Elasticsearch is primarily Java-based.

Requirements

• Professional experience with vector similarity and vector databases, including knowledge of HNSW, IVF, or relevant algorithms.
• Strong skills in core Java and familiarity with data structures and concurrency constructs.
• Ability to work autonomously, guiding projects from start to finish, including design and collaboration with engineers.
• Comfortable with collaborative development and providing feedback on code.
• Experience with various data storage technologies such as Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proven track record of using AI in development and debugging complex systems.
• Ability to collaborate across functions and teams seamlessly.
