Principal Software Engineer, AI Tooling & Adoption @Fivetran

Overview

Fivetran is seeking an exceptional Principal Software Engineer to lead the AI adoption initiative across the Engineering organization. This role requires a blend of deep technical expertise, strategic business acumen, and change management capabilities. The successful candidate will be the driving force behind transforming engineering practices while implementing AI-driven productivity enhancements.

Key Responsibilities

• Adoption Management & Leadership (40%)
  • Lead the evolution from AI-curious to AI-native engineering practices across all teams.
  • Convert skeptics into advocates through data-driven demonstrations and hands-on enablement.
  • Establish KPIs for AI adoption and implement interventions to accelerate uptake.
  • Create forums for knowledge sharing and peer-to-peer learning.
• Technical Leadership (35%)
  • Evaluate and recommend emerging AI tools.
  • Design frameworks for integrating AI tools into development workflows.
  • Implement proof-of-concepts for coding agents in standardized tasks.
  • Ensure AI tool usage meets security and compliance requirements.
  • Set best practices and guidelines for AI-assisted development.
  • Analyze and optimize performance and cost-efficiency of AI tools.
  • Identify opportunities for competitive advantage through AI innovations.
• Business Leadership (25%)
  • Develop and execute an AI adoption roadmap.
  • Manage a $1M+ annual tool budget and demonstrate ROI.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders across the organization.
  • Negotiate enterprise contracts and manage vendor relationships.
  • Monitor industry trends to maintain leadership in AI engineering.
  • Design adoption playbooks for diverse teams.
  • Identify and eliminate barriers to AI adoption.
  • Communicate adoption metrics and success stories to leadership.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• Hands-on experience with AI development tools (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, etc.).
• Strong understanding of LLMs and AI model capabilities.
• Experience with CI/CD and modern software development workflows.
• Proven ability to drive initiatives across large engineering organizations.
• Strong communication skills and ability to present to executives.
• Experience building training programs and enablement materials.
• Data-driven approach to measuring adoption metrics.

Location

This is a full-time position based out of Oakland, California, with a hybrid work model offering two days in the office each week.
