Overview
This role is for a Principal Software Engineer in the Elasticsearch Performance team at Elastic, a company that specializes in search and AI solutions for businesses worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
- Own core performance engineering initiatives from architecture to production, focusing on high-impact optimizations.
- Develop foundational performance models and methodologies for complex, distributed systems.
- Drive optimization strategies to ensure Elasticsearch remains performant, predictable, and scalable.
- Profile and analyze system behavior to identify bottlenecks.
- Ensure robust performance benchmarks and regression detection for various architectures.
- Collaborate across the company to embed performance-first thinking in new features.
- Drive automation efforts by designing AI-assisted optimization tools.
- Mentor and coach other engineers to foster a culture of technical excellence.
Requirements
- Deep knowledge of Java internals and JVM memory management.
- Proven experience in profiling and optimizing distributed systems using benchmarking tools.
- Solid understanding of distributed systems architecture and scaling challenges.
- Experience using AI or advanced tooling for optimization and debugging.
- Strong collaboration skills across functions and teams.
- Ability to work autonomously and drive decisions in a distributed team.
