Elastic, the Search AI Company, enables everyone to find answers using their data at scale. The Principal Software Engineer will join the Elasticsearch - Search team, focusing on enhancing vector similarity search functionality in Elasticsearch and improving the search experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to develop a leading vector database offering with enhanced speed and relevance in search.
• Build new search features and address bugs while improving code clarity.
• Collaborate with a globally distributed team on vector search capabilities.
• Serve as an expert on vector similarity implementation in Elasticsearch.
• Engage with community members on issues and pull requests, triaging when necessary.
• Write idiomatic modern Java, focused on software scalability and intuitiveness.

Requirements

• Professional experience with vector similarity and vector databases, including algorithms like HNSW and IVF.
• Strong proficiency in core Java and knowledge of data structures and concurrency constructs.
• Ability to work autonomously, leading projects from design to implementation.
• Experience in collaborative development and providing feedback on code.
• Familiarity with various data storage technologies (e.g., Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in a remote setting.
• Track record of using AI for development acceleration and complex system debugging.
• Capability to collaborate across functions and seamlessly transition between projects.
