Overview
Elastic, the Search AI Company, is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch - Search team. This globally-distributed team focuses on enhancing vector similarity search functionality within Elasticsearch.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead initiatives to produce an industry-leading vector database offering with unmatched speed and relevance in search.
- Contribute to Elasticsearch full-time, developing new search features and troubleshooting complex bugs.
- Collaborate with a globally distributed team on vector search capabilities.
- Become an expert on Elasticsearch's vector similarity, improving it based on insights and inquiries.
- Engage with community members on issues and pull requests, sometimes triaging and resolving them.
- Write idiomatic modern Java, as Elasticsearch is predominantly Java.
Requirements
- Experience implementing techniques in vector similarity within search platforms or academic research.
- Professional expertise with vector similarity and databases, including familiarity with algorithms like HNSW and IVF.
- Strong skills in core Java and knowledge of data structures and concurrency constructs.
- Ability to autonomously manage projects from inception to completion.
- Experience with collaborative development and feedback within teams, particularly in remote settings.
- Familiarity with data storage technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Track record of using AI to enhance development and debug complex systems.
