Overview

The role involves joining the Search & Personalization ML team at Instacart, which focuses on creating advanced ranking systems that enhance search, recommendations, and advertising. The team aims to improve user experience by developing a unified platform for personalization and optimization of the shopping journey.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect the ranking backbone for query understanding, personalization, and multi-objective ranking.
• Design a search autosuggest system optimized for personalization and value-based relevance.
• Develop long-horizon objective functions and uplift/causal value models.
• Implement production-grade Multi-Task Learning techniques.
• Own the inference layer focusing on re-ranking, diversity, and quality constraints.
• Enhance evaluation practices including online experiments and attribution pipelines.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align ranking policies with business goals.
• Mentor ML engineers in ranking systems and causal inference.

Requirements

• 5+ years applying machine learning at scale, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership role.
• Experience optimizing ranking or recommendation systems, using multi-objective optimization.
• Proficient in coding (Python) and data analysis (SQL/Pandas) with expertise in machine learning frameworks.
• Strong analytical and communication skills.
• Graduate degree in machine learning, statistics, computer science, or related fields.
