Senior R&D Software Engineer, Fivetran AI @Fivetran

Overview

Fivetran is seeking a Senior R&D Software Engineer to join their Fivetran AI team, focusing on building data infrastructure that empowers AI applications. This role combines aspects of software engineering with research in AI techniques to facilitate the development of reliable data systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Research emerging techniques in retrieval, reasoning, and agentic AI, assessing relevance to the roadmap.
• Prototype new ideas rapidly and convert viable concepts into production-grade features.
• Develop and maintain both back-end and front-end systems for the Fivetran AI product, including Agents Schema pipelines and the Context Catalog UI.
• Manage production reliability, participating in on-call rotation and incident response.
• Write and maintain tests to ensure quality and reliability.
• Use coding agents to automate repetitive tasks, allowing focus on research and design work.
• Collaborate with product and design teams to inform development based on market understanding.
• Contribute to hiring processes and participate in interviews.

Requirements

• 5+ years of programming experience in Python and/or Java, with versatility in back-end and front-end work.
• Ability to read AI/ML research and create working prototypes based on findings.
• Strong product and market awareness to discern valuable techniques from hype.
• Experience with SQL and data warehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, or similar).
• Willingness to work across the full stack – research, backend, frontend, SRE, and QA.
• Ability to write well-structured, performant code and improve existing codebases.
• Experience with coding agents or similar tooling to enhance engineering workflows.
• Analytical mindset to identify system gaps and suggest improvements.
• Able to thrive in a fast-paced, startup-like environment.

Location

This is a full-time hybrid position based out of New York, NY, requiring two days in the office each week.
