Senior R&D Software Engineer, Fivetran AI @Fivetran

Overview

The role involves joining Fivetran's fast-growing AI team as a Senior R&D Software Engineer, contributing to the development of open data infrastructure that powers AI agents. This is a full-time hybrid position based out of Oakland, California.

Key Responsibilities

• Research and evaluate emerging techniques in retrieval, reasoning, and agentic AI relevant to Fivetran AI's roadmap.
• Prototype new ideas quickly and transform proven ideas into production-grade features.
• Build and maintain back-end and front-end systems for the Fivetran AI product.
• Contribute to the AISQL capability, enabling natural language to SQL based on dbt metric definitions.
• Take ownership of production reliability through on-call rotation and incident response.
• Write and maintain tests and perform hands-on QA to catch issues early.
• Utilize coding agents to automate repetitive tasks to focus on research and design work.
• Collaborate with product and design to shape future developments.
• Contribute to hiring efforts by participating in the interview process.

Requirements

• 5+ years of programming experience with Python and/or Java.
• Strong product and market awareness to assess the relevance of emerging techniques.
• Experience with SQL and data warehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks).
• Ability to work across the full stack as needed.
• Coding skills for well-structured and performant code.
• Analytical mindset to identify and design improvements in existing systems.
• Experience with LLM-powered applications is a plus.
