Senior R&D Software Engineer, Fivetran AI @Fivetran

Overview

Fivetran is looking for a Senior R&D Software Engineer to join the Fivetran AI team. This role involves building open data infrastructure that powers AI agents, requiring engineers who thrive in a startup-like environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Research emerging techniques in retrieval and agentic AI to inform Fivetran AI’s roadmap.
• Prototype new ideas and develop them into production-grade features.
• Build and maintain back-end and front-end systems for the Fivetran AI product.
• Contribute to the AISQL capability which converts natural language to SQL.
• Take ownership of production reliability including incident response and SRE tasks.
• Create tests and perform hands-on QA.
• Utilize coding agents to optimize engineering tasks.
• Collaborate with product and design teams to shape development directions.
• Participate in the hiring process by interviewing candidates.

Requirements

• 5+ years of programming experience in Python and/or Java.
• Expertise in executing complex tasks independently.
• Ability to read AI/ML research and develop prototypes from findings.
• Experience with SQL and data warehouses such as BigQuery or Snowflake.
• Willingness to engage in full-stack tasks including research, backend, frontend, SRE, and QA.
• Strong coding skills and ability to suggest improvements to codebases.
• Experience with coding agents or similar AI tools.
• Analytical mindset to identify and design practical improvements.
• Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities.

Location
