Senior Software Engineer, Affirm Bank @Affirm

Overview

Affirm is building its own bank, and this role sits in the engineering team that runs it. The Senior Software Engineer will join a small, AI-native team responsible for the systems behind Affirm's banking operations, involving launching banking products and ensuring reliable infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Own bank systems end-to-end, including design, build, integration, and operational response.
• Enhance team effectiveness and code quality by setting and improving standards.
• Utilize AI tools as a multiplier for development tasks and documentation.
• Manage vendor relationships related to third-party integrations.
• Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Internal Audit for compliance in system design.
• Ensure operational reliability through monitoring and runbook creation.
• Communicate technical strategies to non-engineering stakeholders.
• Mentor new engineers and help establish practices as the team grows.

Requirements

• 6+ years of software engineering experience with hands-on skills in end-to-end ownership.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity and balance speed with engineering judgment.
• Experience in lean engineering cultures with a focus on simplicity.
• Proficient in using AI-assisted development tools.
• Strong systems thinking in public cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS), infrastructure-as-code, and cloud data platforms.
• Experience working in regulated environments such as banking or healthcare.
• Exceptional communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
