Senior Software Engineer, AI Productivity @Instacart

Overview

Instacart is transforming the grocery industry, focusing on building AI-powered platforms and tools that enhance productivity for engineers and operators. This remote role is part of the AI Productivity team, where the Senior Software Engineer will design, build, and operate production systems that integrate large language models and intelligent automation into workflows.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate AI-powered services and internal applications that improve developer and operator productivity.
• Implement robust back-end services in languages such as Python, Go, or Java, and integrate foundation models via APIs.
• Own projects end-to-end, focusing on technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and iterative improvements.
• Collaborate with Developer Platform, ML Platform, Security, and Legal to ensure safe and compliant AI usage.
• Define success metrics and run experiments to validate impact and guide iteration.
• Create and maintain shared tooling, libraries, and documentation, while mentoring teammates on best practices.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production services.
• 3+ years of experience in at least one of: Python, Go, or Java.
• 2+ years of experience integrating ML or LLM capabilities into applications.
• Practical experience with AWS or GCP, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• Proficiency with SQL and data modeling; experience with data pipelines.
• Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, and on-call rotation participation.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
