Senior Software Engineer, AI Productivity @Instacart

Overview

Instacart is transforming the grocery industry by building AI-powered platforms and tools that enhance productivity for engineers and operators. This remote role focuses on designing and operating production systems that integrate intelligent automation and large language models into everyday workflows.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate AI-powered services and internal applications to improve productivity.
• Implement robust back-end services using languages such as Python, Go, or Java; integrate foundation models via APIs; apply techniques like retrieval-augmented generation.
• Own projects end-to-end, focusing on requirements, technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and iterative improvements.
• Partner with Developer Platform, ML Platform, Security, and Legal teams to ensure compliance and safety in AI usage.
• Define success metrics and run experiments to validate impact and guide iteration.
• Create and maintain shared tooling and documentation, mentoring teammates on AI development best practices.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• 3+ years of experience in Python, Go, or Java.
• 2+ years of experience integrating ML capabilities into applications.
• Practical knowledge of AWS or GCP, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• Proficiency with SQL and experience building data pipelines.
• Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, and observability.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.

Location

This role is remote but limited to candidates located in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, or Nova Scotia, Canada.
