Staff Engineer @MongoDB

Overview

The Storage Layer Services team is currently re-architecting the MongoDB Cloud Storage Layer. This relatively new team at MongoDB is focused on building performant multi-tenant distributed storage services to enhance the existing MongoDB cloud storage architecture.

The role involves working closely with teams in Sydney and North America to drive key projects and contribute to core features of a popular database.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver goals spanning a 6-18 month timeframe.
• Define the roadmap for the next 12 months.
• Write well-tested, production-ready code in Rust.
• Drive process improvements across the organization.
• Investigate performance regressions and guide the team through complex changes.
• Champion operational excellence and participate in an on-call rotation.
• Mentor junior engineers and cultivate talent through interviewing and knowledge sharing.
• Develop expertise in cutting-edge database and distributed systems research.
• Handle time-sensitive customer escalations and propose high-impact projects.
• Drive consensus on complex issues affecting multiple teams.
• Be open to occasional travel to the US.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in programming, debugging, and performance tuning of highly concurrent or distributed systems, particularly in systems languages (C, C++, Rust, etc).
• Proven technical leadership abilities and experience in solving vague problems iteratively.
• Solid understanding of systems fundamentals such as cache management, log-based recovery, and transactions.
• Experience with concurrent, asynchronous services, and understanding of backpressure and tail latency.
• Background in large, highly available, scalable systems such as databases or cloud storage services.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a focus on collaboration and mentoring.
• Interest in continuous learning in computer science and software engineering.
