Staff Engineer, Query Optimization @MongoDB

Overview

The role involves joining the MongoDB Server Query Optimization team to build a distributed open-source query optimizer. The team is responsible for the MongoDB Query Language and the entire lifecycle of queries, ensuring high performance and user experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Innovate flexible schema databases and help build a world-class query optimization system.
• Research state-of-the-art query systems to inform design decisions.
• Provide technical vision and direction leveraging knowledge of product strengths and industry trends.
• Architect plans and lead the team towards successful execution.
• Advise management on roadmap decisions, processes, and architectural designs.
• Identify, design, implement, test, and support new query performance features and enhancements.
• Coordinate changes across a feature-rich, large code base with other engineering teams.
• Mentor and grow team members through coaching and leading by example.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in data management systems, distributed systems, or large-scale backend engineering.
• Experience in building production-level code with rigorous design structure and quality.
• Degree in Computer Science or similar field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience with large code bases in C++ or another systems programming language.
• Strong foundation in core database internals; experience in query optimization is a bonus.
• Familiarity with compilers, language transpilers, or distributed storage systems is valued.
