Staff R&D Software Engineer, Fivetran AI @Fivetran

Overview

Fivetran is seeking a Staff R&D Software Engineer to join their Fivetran AI team, focusing on building the open data infrastructure that powers AI agents. This role involves researching emerging techniques within AI and turning innovative ideas into production software.

Key Responsibilities

• Research emerging techniques in retrieval, reasoning, and agentic AI and determine their suitability for Fivetran AI’s roadmap.
• Prototype new ideas quickly and develop successful prototypes into shipped, production-grade features.
• Define technical direction across multiple teams, ensuring coherent architecture decisions.
• Build and maintain back-end and front-end systems for Fivetran AI products.
• Drive the AISQL capability, converting natural language queries into SQL based on dbt metric definitions.
• Ensure production reliability through on-call duties and incident response.
• Establish testing and QA practices and contribute to hands-on QA work when necessary.
• Mentor other engineers and assist in the hiring process.

Requirements

• 8+ years of programming experience in Python and/or Java.
• Strong product and market awareness with the ability to influence and guide technical decisions across teams.
• Proficiency in SQL and data warehousing solutions (BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks).
• Experience with coding agents or similar AI tooling.
• Comfortable working in a startup-like environment, managing shifting priorities and high ownership.
