Staff Software Engineer, Affirm Bank @Affirm

Overview

Affirm is building its own bank and is seeking a Staff Software Engineer as a technical anchor for a small, AI-native engineering team. This role involves setting technical direction and owning complex systems integral to Affirm's banking operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Set technical direction across the bank's systems.
• Own complex problems end-to-end, including design, integration, and incident response.
• Establish coding and documentation standards to amplify team capabilities.
• Leverage AI tools to enhance engineering functions.
• Lead vendor evaluation, integration, and performance oversight.
• Define data flows and integration patterns with Affirm Inc.
• Ensure compliance from inception in partnership with relevant departments.
• Establish operational best practices to support audit-readiness.
• Communicate effectively with stakeholders across the organization.
• Mentor and support team development and high standards.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on high-stakes systems.
• Experience owning ambiguity and making prioritization calls.
• Familiarity with AI development tools to drive productivity.
• Strong foundation in public cloud infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code.
• Experience in regulated environments, especially banking or fintech.
• Capability to communicate technical concepts to non-engineering stakeholders.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
