Overview

The role of Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Identity Decisioning) at Affirm is pivotal to the customer checkout experience and supports the company’s international expansion. The Identity team is responsible for KYC, user lifecycle management, and identity decisioning across multiple regulatory environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long timeline and align it with business-impacting projects.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
• Advocate for technical solutions and operational processes within the team.
• Ensure team operations and availability with appropriate monitoring and alerting mechanisms.
• Create a culture of quality and ownership through code review and design standards.
• Develop talent within the team by providing guidance, feedback, and leading by example.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale, using languages like Python or Kotlin.
• Experience in developing highly available distributed systems with AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
• Ability to deliver major features or system components with a solid technical and execution plan.
• Comfortable navigating from low-level language idioms to large system architecture.
• Proven ability to gather and iterate on feedback from peers.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with global engineering teams.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
