Overview

The role involves joining Instacart's Data Infrastructure organization as a Staff Software Engineer, focusing on Data Governance and Foundations. The team works on systems that power the company's data ecosystem, including a modern open data lakehouse and multi-engine compute platform.

Key Responsibilities

• Translate Instacart’s data strategy into an actionable multi-year architecture roadmap.
• Own the open lakehouse foundation: define and deliver unified table formats and storage governance.
• Drive real-time and streaming infrastructure for critical use cases, setting deployment patterns and SLAs.
• Pioneer AI-native data infrastructure engineering by applying LLM/AI tools to enhance development and cost optimization.
• Elevate engineering excellence: lead architecture reviews and mentor engineers while ensuring cross-org alignment.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with data infrastructure or distributed systems.
• Hands-on expertise with modern data lakehouse architectures and distributed query/compute engines.
• Experience with event-driven and streaming infrastructure for real-time pipelines.
• Proven ownership of major platform transitions or migrations.
• Ability to build cost/benefit models for infrastructure investments.
