    Overview

    The Developer Experience team at Instacart is responsible for enhancing the tools and platforms that empower over 1000 engineers to deliver high-quality software efficiently. The Staff Software Engineer will lead the technical direction for the developer infrastructure relied upon by Instacart’s engineers.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead the technical direction for local and remote development environments, focusing on provisioning, health checks, and developer ergonomics.
    • Oversee CI pipeline infrastructure and commitment-to-feedback loop, ensuring reliability and effectiveness.
    • Manage the architecture and advancement of pre-production environments for stability and accountability.
    • Enhance git infrastructure and implement disaster recovery plans.
    • Drive the integration of AI-powered developer tooling across workflows.
    • Initiate multi-quarter projects to improve developer velocity, CI reliability, and local development loops.
    • Define and track developer experience metrics for system optimizations.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure platform changes with minimal disruption.
    • Mentor engineers and expand the community of developer infrastructure experts at Instacart.
    • Represent the team in discussions about CI/CD and AI-augmented development.

    Requirements

    • 10+ years of software development experience.
    • Extensive hands-on experience with CI/CD systems at scale (e.g., Buildkite, GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
    • Experience with local/remote development environments and developer platforms.
    • Proven track record in leading cross-team technical initiatives that impact developer metrics.
    • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containerization (Docker), and orchestration tools.
    • Experience with large monorepos and associated git challenges.
    • Strong technical leadership skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or related field.
    • Experience with evolving developer environment platforms.
    • Experience stabilizing pre-production environments.
    • Familiarity with AI-powered developer tooling.
    • Ability to define and track developer productivity metrics.
    • Experience in high-growth environments managing developer infrastructure.
