The United Nations University has announced a new consultancy vacancy for a Researcher position focused on Multilateralism and Global Governance under its Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR) in New York City. The 16-month, in-person hybrid role is part of the Global Governance Innovation (GGI) Platform, a flagship initiative designed to document and promote innovative approaches to international cooperation and institutional reform.

The project focuses on strengthening multilateral cooperation by documenting practical solutions and institutional models that address global challenges such as underdevelopment, climate change, and emerging geopolitical risks.

The initiative seeks to support UN Member States and international partners in designing more effective and inclusive global institutions.
The Researcher will play a central role in research development, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge production. Key responsibilities include:
• Developing research themes aligned with global governance priorities
• Identifying relevant policy processes and institutional innovations
• Producing case studies and validating data with partners
• Conducting interviews and media assessments
• Supporting donor-aligned project implementation
• Writing policy briefs, reports, and analytical papers
• Commissioning expert research contributions
• Developing training and educational materials
• Designing engagement strategies for UN Member States and stakeholders
• Participating in high-level panels, roundtables, and media discussions
• Identifying global experts and institutional partners
• Supervising fellows, interns, and consultants
• Coordinating with communications teams on outreach materials
• Supporting administrative and management functions
The role also includes contributing to quality assurance processes and ensuring timely delivery of project outputs.
Applicants are expected to have strong academic and professional credentials in fields related to governance, policy, and international affairs.
Minimum requirements include:
• A PhD is strongly preferred, though an advanced degree with extensive experience may be considered
• At least 5 years of policy research experience or equivalent professional expertise
• Strong knowledge of the United Nations system and multilateral processes
• Experience engaging with UN–Member State dynamics
• Excellent writing and analytical skills
• Experience organizing high-level events or convenings
• Ability to translate complex research into policy-relevant outputs
Desirable skills include:
• Data visualization and research communication
• Experience in international cooperation or global governance
• Familiarity with mixed research methodologies
• Strong interpersonal and multicultural teamwork skills
The role also emphasizes alignment with United Nations values, including inclusion, integrity, humility, and a commitment to delivering measurable impact.
The consultancy is offered under a 16-month contract, with a maximum remuneration of approximately USD 110,004 per year, paid monthly. An additional USD 12,000 is provided to support health insurance costs throughout the contract period.
The position is based in New York City and requires on-site engagement under a hybrid working arrangement. Travel may be required for missions, subject to UN clearance and logistical conditions.
Consultants will not hold staff status within the UN system and are responsible for tax obligations in their respective jurisdictions.
