The Legal team helps the company grow responsibly, advocating for Brex and for the thousands of growing businesses we serve. We provide strategic advice and guidance to all Brex teams, protect Brex, advise on risk, and represent the company externally, negotiating with partners and interacting with regulators. Where you’ll work
This role will be based in our San Francisco office. We are a hybrid environment that combines the energy and connections of being in the office with the benefits and flexibility of working from home. We currently require a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a perk, we also have up to four weeks per year of fully remote work!
What you’ll do
You’re here to be a trusted legal partner to Brex’s People team, providing practical, business-minded advice on employment matters affecting Brex’s global workforce. Working in close collaboration with senior members of the Legal team, you’ll advise on day-to-day employment issues, help manage employee and contingent worker disputes, and support the development of policies and practices governing Brex employees and contingent workers. This is an opportunity to build deep employment law expertise while supporting a dynamic, high-growth fintech company.
Responsibilities
• Provide business-minded legal guidance and support to Brex’s People team on day-to-day employment issues, including performance management, terminations, recruiting, hiring, leaves of absence, employee accommodations, compensation and benefits, and wage and hour matters
• Support the development and implementation of policies and practices governing Brex employees and contingent workers, in partnership with the People team and senior Legal team members
• Assist in managing employment-related complaints, disputes, litigation, investigations, and responses to regulatory inquiries and charges (e.g. EEOC charges)
• Help manage outside legal counsel retained to assist Brex on employment matters, ensuring their work is efficient and drives value for Brex
• Identify employment- and contingent worker-related risks and recommend practical solutions for managing and mitigating them
• Research and analyze employment-related laws that apply in the locations where Brex employees and contingent workers work, including throughout the United States and in Brex’s international office locations, and monitor employment law developments and their potential impact on Brex
• Support the development and delivery of employment-related training to managers and employees
• Assist with responses to employee or contingent worker-related subpoenas, personnel records requests, and other information or legal requests and orders
Requirements
• 5+ years of experience counseling on employment law matters at a reputable law firm, an in-house or corporate legal department, or both
• Experience partnering directly with People / HR functions as their day-to-day legal advisor
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and manage competing priorities
• Practical, problem-solving mindset with the ability to navigate a dynamic, fast-paced environment
• Team player who collaborates effectively with colleagues and business partners to drive meaningful results
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to translate legal complexity into clear guidance for non-lawyers
• Juris Doctor (JD) and active bar membership in good standing of the bar of at least one U.S. state
Bonus Points
• 2+ years of experience at a high-growth tech company
• Working knowledge of California employment law
• Exposure to employment law outside the U.S., particularly in jurisdictions where Brex has offices
• Experience building or delivering employment-related manager training
• Financial services or other highly regulated industry experience
Compensation
The expected salary range for this role is $220,000 - $270,000 USD. However, the starting base pay will depend on a number of factors, including the candidate’s location, skills, experience, market demands, and internal pay parity. Depending on the position offered, equity and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package.
