The company is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead the Elasticsearch Distributed Systems organization, focusing on scaling, performance, and resilience in its Serverless offering.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a long-term engineering strategy for Elasticsearch's distributed systems aligning with product direction and business objectives.
• Drive improvements in performance, scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency supporting Serverless Elasticsearch.
• Lead the evolution of Elasticsearch's core distributed architecture.
• Provide technical leadership and oversight for complex engineering initiatives.
• Own engineering outcomes, balancing technical complexity with customer impact and operational requirements.
• Lead, mentor, and hire engineering managers and senior technical leaders.
• Manage organizational planning, staffing, and resource allocation.
• Collaborate with Product Management and other teams to define priorities and deliver complex initiatives.
• Act as a senior escalation point for critical technical challenges.
• Communicate engineering strategy and progress to senior executives.
• Manage performance consistently across the organization.

Requirements

• Proven track record managing large-scale engineering organizations.
• Hands-on software engineering experience with strength in distributed systems.
• Experience in designing and operating complex, large-scale distributed systems.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts.
• Experience establishing engineering strategy and delivering complex initiatives.
• Strong operational experience, particularly with system reliability.
• Ability to navigate complex organizational challenges and influence stakeholders.
• Compassionate leadership style with commitment to developing others.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
