Senior AI Engineer @GitLab

Overview

As a Senior AI Engineer at GitLab, you'll help build the foundation for GitLab's transformation into an AI-first company. You will report to the Director of Enterprise AI and will be a hands-on technical leader responsible for delivering internal AI-powered solutions that drive measurable business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose business problems before building solutions by mapping workflows and confirming whether AI is a suitable intervention.
• Own AI initiatives end-to-end, from stakeholder discovery and technical design through implementation, deployment, and iteration.
• Design, develop, and ship AI-powered solutions quickly, focusing on practical outcomes and measurable business value.
• Improve organizational flow by building solutions that reduce bottlenecks and increase throughput, measuring success using flow metrics, adoption, and ROI.
• Integrate AI capabilities into existing systems and workflows using APIs and modern AI platforms, while considering the right tools for the job.
• Leverage GitLab's AI offerings and provide real-world usage insights back to R&D.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to identify real constraints and align on outcomes.
• Define and track success through business metrics and feedback loops.
• Contribute to technical direction by evaluating tools and creating reusable foundations to scale the team's impact.

Requirements

• Strong coding skills in at least one modern scripting language (e.g., Python, JavaScript/TypeScript).
• Proficiency with REST APIs, GraphQL, and integration patterns.
• Experience with AI technologies, including prompt engineering and model selection.
• Understanding of AI safety design principles and the ability to build with security in mind.
• Systems thinking abilities to analyze complex processes and identify constraints.
• Familiarity with enterprise business systems, including CRM and marketing automation tools.
• Experience owning complex initiatives from discovery through delivery in a measurable way.
• Ability to prioritize ruthlessly and deliver iteratively, with a user-centered mindset.
