Senior Backend Engineer, AI Engineering: Chat @GitLab

Overview

GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, enabling organizations to increase developer productivity and accelerate digital transformation. The role of Senior Backend Engineer on the Duo Chat team involves building core AI capabilities behind GitLab Duo Chat.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and build flow components and agentic flows in the Flow Registry using Python and LangGraph.
• Develop, ship, and maintain backend features for GitLab Duo Chat across the Python Duo Workflow Service and the GitLab Rails monolith.
• Integrate new generative AI models and multi-agent orchestration patterns into Duo Chat.
• Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs, ensuring reliability and clarity of contracts with frontend clients.
• Improve debugging, observability, and test coverage while tracking latency and error rates.
• Collaborate with Product, UX, frontend, and AI specialists for high-quality improvements.
• Document standards, patterns, and learnings with other engineers to enhance AI integration.
• Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations to troubleshoot and strengthen resiliency.

Requirements

• Significant experience building and maintaining production Python backends.
• Practical experience designing and shipping AI-powered, agentic backend features.
• Working proficiency in Ruby on Rails, or a strong willingness to learn.
• Proficiency in designing or extending REST or GraphQL APIs.
• Strong SQL skills and familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL.
• Ability to diagnose and prevent performance and reliability problems at scale.
• Experience solving technical problems and advocating for quality improvements.
• Openness to learning and collaborating in an async-first, distributed team.
