Senior Backend Engineer (Go), Tenant Scale: Gitaly @GitLab

Overview

The role involves working as a Backend Engineer on the Gitaly team at GitLab, focusing on building and managing GitLab’s Git data storage tier. You will help ensure reliable, secure, and fast access to Git repositories through APIs and storage operations, contributing to both GitLab.com and self-managed customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Own moderately sized to complex technical initiatives from problem definition and proposal through implementation and operational follow-through.
• Act as the directly responsible individual for projects; align stakeholders, communicate progress, and keep execution moving.
• Lead technical design for distributed storage, Git repository management, and scalability problems.
• Collaborate with engineers and teams across GitLab to deliver cross-functional outcomes.
• Improve engineering practices through mentoring, documentation, and code reviews.
• Take operational ownership of the systems, including incident response and performance analysis.
• Identify opportunities for automation and improvements in workflows.
• Respond to user emergencies and support requests, including on-call duties.

Requirements

• Significant experience in building, debugging, and optimizing distributed software systems.
• Experience in owning complex projects end to end, from design to operational support.
• Strong systems design skills and understanding of performance and scalability.
• Track record of influencing technical decisions across teams.
• Experience in mentoring engineers and improving team practices.
• Professional experience with Go or another backend language.
• Operational experience with production systems and incident response.
• Desirable experience with Ruby, Git internals, gRPC, or Git server infrastructure.
