Senior Backend Engineer (Go), Tenant Scale: Gitaly @GitLab

Overview

GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Gitaly team. The role involves building GitLab’s Git data storage tier, ensuring reliable, secure, and fast access to Git repositories through APIs and storage operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Own moderately sized to complex technical initiatives from problem definition to operational follow-through.
• Act as the directly responsible individual for projects, aligning stakeholders and communicating progress.
• Lead technical design for distributed storage and repository management.
• Collaborate with various teams across GitLab to achieve cross-functional outcomes.
• Improve engineering practices through mentoring and knowledge sharing.
• Take operational ownership of the systems worked on, including incident response and performance analysis.
• Identify opportunities for improvements through automation and better workflows.
• Respond to user emergencies, platform alerts, and support requests with regular on-call duties.

Requirements

• Significant professional experience in building and optimizing distributed software systems in production environments.
• Experience managing complex projects from technical design to operational support.
• Strong systems design skills and the ability to assess performance and consistency.
• A proven track record in influencing technical decisions across teams.
• Experience with Go or another backend language; familiarity with Ruby, Git internals, gRPC is desirable.
• Strong communication skills, able to simplify complex technical concepts.
• Experience operating production systems and participating in incident response.
