Overview

GitLab is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to design, implement, and evolve product capabilities, influencing technical and product direction while solving high-scope backend problems.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance.
• Advocate for product quality, security, availability, and performance.
• Mentor associate and intermediate engineers, improving team delivery practices.
• Diagnose and prevent performance/reliability issues, participating in incident response.
• Integrate AI into production engineering work to improve outcomes.

Requirements

• Strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages with adaptability to learn new ones.
• Experience designing modular backend structures and migrating safe architectures.
• Ability to lead through influence, technical judgment, and clear communication.
• Proven experience with agentic AI systems in production environments.
