Overview

GitLab is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with a focus on Ruby on Rails to join their Planning Views team. The role involves shaping backend architecture and developing features that serve millions of work items in GitLab's platform.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Product to define requirements and break projects into manageable iterations.
• Design and implement backend features, including GraphQL and REST APIs, focusing on performance and reliability.
• Optimize PostgreSQL performance and utilize Elasticsearch or ClickHouse where necessary.
• Develop real-time features for work item information updates.
• Create proofs of concept and ensure quality through testing and feature flag rollouts.
• Mentor engineers and open source contributors through code reviews and feedback.
• Participate in on-call rotations for troubleshooting and improving observability.
• Enhance the developer experience for the team.

Requirements

• Strong product mindset and user-focused approach.
• Experience leading and mentoring engineering teams.
• Full stack experience with current backend focus, particularly in Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
• Strong PostgreSQL optimization skills.
• Experience designing GraphQL and/or REST APIs.
• Proficiency in improving automated test suites.
• Excellent communication skills in a distributed environment.
• Experience with AI integration or tools like Elasticsearch or ClickHouse is a plus.
