Overview
GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team. This role involves building workflows that turn stated intents into refined work items and mergeable code, primarily using Ruby on Rails and Python.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead backend features from early product discussions through to post-launch learning.
- Build application programming interfaces and data models behind agent-generated work items and implementation plans.
- Develop evaluation and benchmarking systems for workflow quality and success rates.
- Collaborate with product and design teams to shape scope and make trade-offs.
- Coordinate multi-person projects and communicate decisions in an asynchronous environment.
- Mentor other engineers and contribute to the technical direction of the team.
- Work in short iterations and use results and user feedback to guide future work.
Requirements
- Strong Ruby on Rails experience in a large production environment.
- Production experience with Python.
- Experience leading substantial projects with clear user or business outcomes.
- A product mindset with experience in owning features end-to-end.
- Full-stack background with a focus on backend engineering.
- Strong API design and SQL fundamentals.
- Experience with AI-assisted development is beneficial.
- Ability to work independently and support technical leadership and mentoring.
