Overview

The role of Senior Backend Engineer on the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team at GitLab involves building the intent-to-code loop that transforms stated intents into refined work items and verified code. This position is remote and based in Poland.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead backend features from product discussions through to rollout and post-launch learning.
• Build flows, APIs, and data models for agent-generated work items, implementation plans, and mergeable code.
• Develop evaluation and benchmarking systems measuring workflow quality and success rates.
• Utilize Ruby on Rails and Python for producing reliable production systems.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape project scope and make trade-offs.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to the technical direction of the team.
• Work in short iterations, using feedback to drive progress.

Requirements

• Strong experience with Ruby on Rails and production experience with Python.
• Experience leading major projects with clear outcomes.
• Proficiency in API design and SQL fundamentals.
• Ability to work independently and across functions while providing leadership and mentoring.
• Experience with GraphQL and PostgreSQL is advantageous but not mandatory.
