Overview
The Senior Engineering Manager at GitLab is responsible for driving non-linear productivity by building and leading a small team to address high-leverage friction points in GitLab's software development lifecycle (SDLC). This role involves significant autonomy in defining the team's objectives and the approach to enhance efficiency within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and refine the operating model for non-linear productivity, focusing on diagnosing friction and prioritizing fixes based on system-level metrics.
- Identify non-linear productivity opportunities across the SDLC, including flaky tests, review latency, and pipeline reliability.
- Source, evaluate, and select 4 exceptional engineers for the pilot squad, establishing the team dynamics and working norms.
- Lead hands-on investigations to baseline key metrics and diagnose friction points affecting system performance.
- Own high-impact friction areas, ensuring solutions are adopted and tracked for effectiveness.
- Report on impact and ensure fixes do not introduce new risks to CI/CD systems.
Requirements
- Proven experience leading high-autonomy engineering teams, particularly in developer productivity or related areas.
- Strong familiarity with CI/CD systems, pipelines, and their performance metrics.
- Exceptional analytical skills, with a focus on root-cause analysis and talent selection.
- Strong executive-level communication ability, essential for reporting to engineering leadership.
- Experience with AI-assisted development workflows is a plus.
