Senior Software Engineer @GitLab

Overview

As a Senior Software Engineer at GitLab, you will work on key areas related to the data layer behind vulnerability and dependency management capabilities. The role involves designing and developing scalable backend systems while focusing on PostgreSQL and integrating with third-party systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Own significant components of larger deliverables from technical design through delivery.
• Design and develop backend systems for vulnerability and dependency management, including security report ingestion, storage, indexing, and querying.
• Build and improve systems using Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL, and contribute to newer services using technologies such as Go or Rust.
• Improve queries and schemas within PostgreSQL as the data grows.
• Collaborate with product, design, frontend, and engineering partners on project decisions.
• Contribute to technical plans and design discussions, and support other engineers through reviews and documentation.
• Apply a security mindset in system design to identify and handle vulnerabilities.
• Help establish modular services in GitLab Security as the team moves toward these patterns.

Requirements

• Professional backend engineering experience with a clear track record of delivering production features.
• Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including query profiling and optimization.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails, Go, or Python.
• Ability to guide peers in complex work and execute delivery plans independently.
• Strong collaboration skills with the ability to explain technical tradeoffs.
• Proactive communication skills regarding decisions, progress, and blockers.
• Experience in using security tools for vulnerability management.
• Familiarity with AI tools to improve delivery outcomes.
