Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Consumer Authentication Platform) @Affirm

Overview

The Consumer Authentication Platform team at Affirm is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to develop secure and reliable authentication systems for consumers connecting with financial products. This remote role requires strong technical capability and cross-functional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the technical design and delivery of authentication platform capabilities, leading projects from requirements to ongoing operation.
• Build secure, highly available systems supporting consumer sign-in, authentication factors, account recovery, and more.
• Collaborate with various stakeholders during the product development lifecycle to translate requirements into pragmatic designs.
• Identify and advocate for solutions to project, process, technology, and security issues.
• Create and monitor metrics to support operations and availability of team artifacts.
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership through code review and design standards.
• Mentor team members and lead by example in technical leadership.
• Communicate technical decisions and lead investigations into production issues.

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience in backend systems design, development, and launch using languages like Python, Kotlin, or Java.
• Experience with highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Kubernetes, relational databases, and more.
• Ability to define technical plans for significant features with secure and extensible designs.
• Strong ownership of growth and proactive feedback seeking, along with mentoring abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
• Familiarity with security protocols (e.g., OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect) and frameworks (e.g., NIST Digital Identity Guidelines, PCI DSS).
• Experience designing session management and multi-factor authentication systems.

Location

This remote role is open only to candidates residing in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.
