Overview
The Senior Software Security Engineer will engineer security improvements to the GitLab product while building and maintaining tools to detect and prevent abuse on the SaaS platforms. This role is ideal for candidates with a software engineering background interested in transitioning to security engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain core abuse prevention systems and build new abuse detection rules.
- Become a core maintainer for the in-house abuse platform (Ruby on Rails monolith).
- Improve agentic AI capabilities in abuse mitigation tools.
- Collaborate with peer engineering teams to deliver safety improvements for the GitLab product.
- Resolve automation gaps and create efficient automated processes.
- Create and maintain documentation such as runbooks and procedures.
Requirements
- Strong software development skills with experience in Ruby/Rails.
- Experience working on distributed applications with large codebases in cloud environments.
- Desire to proactively develop security engineering skills.
- Comfortable working in a fully remote environment.
- Strong experience with cloud-native development (GCP and/or AWS).
- Interest in security incident handling and platform defense hardening.
- Experience acting as a code reviewer on AI native development teams.

This is a remote position open to candidates in Canada, Israel, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
