Staff Backend Engineer, Architecture Engineering: Nonlinear Productivity @GitLab

Overview

GitLab is an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, empowering organizations to enhance developer productivity and accelerate digital transformation. The Staff Engineer will lead the Nonlinear Productivity team, focusing on optimizing processes and workflows.

Key Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for the team's systems and defend decisions based on real code testing.
• Identify and prioritize sources of friction in GitLab’s software development lifecycle (SDLC) and drive solutions from hypothesis to deployment.
• Collaborate across GitLab's codebase, working as a generalist team.
• Apply distributed systems knowledge to handle code that may fail under specific conditions and mentor others in these practices.
• Collaborate with the India-based team and represent technical progress to stakeholders.
• Participate in hiring processes for other staff-level candidates and influence team growth.
• Own the technical foundation of new projects from day one.

Requirements

• Experience with reliable agentic or large language model-based systems.
• Strong ability to work autonomously in unfamiliar codebases and drive solutions.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems principles.
• Proficiency in Go, Rust, or Python.
• Experience with vague requirements and translating them into actionable steps.
• History of enabling teamwork through mentoring and collaboration.
