Staff Backend Engineer, Developer Experience @GitLab

Overview

GitLab is an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, allowing organizations to enhance developer productivity, operational efficiency, and security while accelerating digital transformation. The Staff Backend Engineer in the Developer Experience group will work cross-functionally to improve the engineering experience and help deliver high-quality code efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive technical excellence across teams by providing hands-on engineering contributions and technical leadership.
• Partner with engineering teams to identify pain points and translate frustrations into actionable improvements for the Developer Experience roadmap.
• Help modernize testing practices to support GitLab's growth.
• Reduce merge and CI friction while building workflows that provide fast, actionable feedback.
• Collaborate with various teams to eliminate architectural and process friction hindering development.
• Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement across the organization.

Requirements

• Deep experience with developer tooling, DevEx strategies, and testing frameworks at scale.
• Experience leading platform or transformation initiatives across multiple teams.
• Proven ability to influence without authority and work collaboratively.
• Familiarity with DevOps workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in a remote-first environment.
• A product mindset with a passion for empowering developers.
