Staff Backend Engineer, Gitlab Delivery: Upgrades @GitLab

Overview

The Staff Engineer on the GitLab Delivery - Upgrades team guides the technical direction for GitLab’s self-managed deployment strategy, ensuring customers can deploy, upgrade, and run GitLab reliably with minimal disruption. This role involves working closely with various teams to shape deployment patterns that reduce operational complexity and improve upgrade processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Guide the technical vision and architecture for cloud-native, self-managed deployments and upgrade workflows.
• Establish operational maturity standards and service integration patterns.
• Design and maintain Kubernetes Operators and upgrade orchestration tooling.
• Develop automation frameworks for database migrations, rolling deployments, and rollback paths.
• Define database and application lifecycle strategies to reduce downtime risk.
• Collaborate with product management and engineering teams to align deployment patterns with customer needs.
• Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and documentation.
• Drive observability, testing, and resilience practices for self-managed deployments.

Requirements

• Strong software engineering experience with production systems.
• Proficient in Go, familiar with Ruby on Rails.
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes in production environments.
• Knowledge of cloud-native systems and tooling like Terraform or Ansible.
• Experience with stateful workloads and PostgreSQL.
• Understanding of Linux systems and production operations.
• Ability to guide through influence and document technical proposals.
• Interest in open source infrastructure or deployment tooling.
