Overview
As a Staff Backend Engineer on GitLab's Events & Messaging Platform team, you'll be a foundational technical leader on a high-visibility infrastructure initiative that is critical to GitLab's operations. This role involves consolidating current asynchronous systems into a single scalable messaging and event-processing platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical execution on the CD platform by decomposing complex architectural designs into deliverable work.
- Solve complex engineering problems and contribute architectural feedback for system evolution.
- Set and maintain technical standards through code review, mentorship, and example.
- Mentor engineers at all levels to enhance their technical skills.
- Represent the CD team in cross-functional discussions and contribute to technical proposals.
- Participate in on-call rotations to ensure availability targets are met.
Requirements
- Deep experience in building backend services in Go in high-scale production environments.
- Expertise in distributed systems design, including durable workflow execution and event-driven architectures.
- Experience in release orchestration, deployment automation, or continuous delivery systems.
- Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes, including progressive delivery patterns.
- Familiarity with GitOps workflows and tools.
- Ability to translate complex architecture into executable engineering work.
- Exceptional communication skills, with a focus on documentation-first practices.
- Self-motivated and organized, with strong judgment and adaptability to ambiguity.
