Overview
The role of Staff Backend Engineer (Ruby) is focused on the DAP Repository Flows team within GitLab's Duo Agent Platform (DAP). This team is dedicated to enhancing customer onboarding and implementing background flows that utilize AI-powered automation on repositories.
Key Responsibilities
- Set and drive the technical direction for the DAP Repository Flows team, making architecture decisions for onboarding and repository flows.
- Lead the design and delivery of autonomous and scheduled agents operating on customer codebases.
- Refine the DAP onboarding experience for quick project configuration.
- Collaborate with other teams within the broader DAP organization.
- Mentor engineers, review designs and code, and elevate technical quality.
- Identify and resolve significant technical challenges to enhance design and functionality.
- Contribute to a culture of autonomy, ownership, and async-first collaboration.
Requirements
- Deep, hands-on experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails in production systems.
- Experience integrating LLMs into products (product integration, not ML model training).
- Experience building agentic systems (autonomous or semi-autonomous agents).
- Track record of designing and shipping complex, high-scale systems and influencing technical direction.
- Strong written communication skills and ability to work effectively in a distributed, async-first environment.
- Judgment and influence expected of a staff-level engineer, including setting direction and unblocking others.
